Environmental Management Practices for Ready Mixed Concrete Operations in Canada

Rodger K. Albright, P. Eng., Head of Environmental Management & Technology, Environment Stewardship Branch for Environment Canada-Atlantic, out of Dartmouth, NS addressed the members of APRMCA at their Annual General Meeting in Saint John, NB on February 17, 2007. His purpose was to bring to the attention of Atlantic Canada’s ready mixed concrete sector the importance of compliance to environmental legislation and regulations.
Mr. Albright keyed his remarks to compliance to Canada's Fisheries Act. Environment Canada is including the ready mixed concrete industry in its Fisheries Act National Inspection Plan, planned for Fall 2007, or Spring 2008. He emphasized that the department's objective at this time is compliance, not fines!
Their enforcement officers will be visiting ready mixed concrete operations throughout Atlantic Canada to evaluate production sites to ensure the good systems are working, and to urge producers to fix risky systems, and install appropriate new systems where necessary.
He referenced the Recommended Guideline for Environmental Management Practices for Ready Mix Concrete Operations prepared by the Canadian Ready Mixed Concrete Association for its members in 2004. This document can also be viewed on this site and downloaded.
APRMCA's Environment Committee is engaged with several departments of Environment at the provincial and federal levels of government, and at Halifax Regional Municipality. The Committee will continue to provide updates about its initiatives and on environment issues affecting the ready mixed concrete sector, as they become available.
